I've been watching this board for a while. Decided to kick off the questions with this question: Do most publishers now accept submissions by email?

What I've noticed is that if a publisher DOES accept e-mail submissions (or if they "prefer" them) they'll say so in their guidelines. The obvious exception is electronic publications.--I think they expect to see e-mail submissions.

If a cover letter is requested in the guidelines along with short bio, what are you to write if you don't have an MFA or an abundance of clips or a long history of various awards from short story submissions? Will it most likely be tossed into the slush pile without any of those things I previously listed?

Well, apparently WE haven't been watching this board very well. My apologies to you all. I'll strive to do better in the future.

As to the question as to whether all editors are willing to accept emails submissions-you need to check their website. A lot of them are now going to email submissions, but there are still a lot out there who do not want nor will they accept email submissions. Read their guidelines carefully and follow what they want.

If you send a quality submission, it will not automatically go into the slush pile if you do not have any publications to offer them. If you do not, don't say anything. Just give a brief bio about yourself, where you work, what you like to do. If you have written something that you are an export about--(you're a chef for example) and you offer your expert opinion, then tell them that. Do not, under any circumstances, tell an editor that you are a new writer and have nothing published. They'll get it when you don't list anything. Editors are looking for well-written, interesting stories and articles--they really don't care if you've been published before or not as long as you know how to write.

What is your opinion on rejection letters? Do they help or hurt a writer?
